Read That? Read This! Stories Told By Letters!
Some of the best historical fiction novels have a way of history coming to life in the style of diary entries or even by letter writing. In this edition of Read That? Read This! If you enjoyed the novel The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, there’s another novel that I recommend if you need a book that tells a story through letters.
The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Burrows, is about Juliet Ashton interviewing members on the British isle of Gurnsey shortly after World War II. The Potato Peel Pie Society was a spur of the moment literary group that gathered during nazi occupation. Theres’s history, romance and the story is told entirely through letters. Sometimes it got confusing when different points of view switch so fast from person to person, but I still enjoyed it.
Dear Missing Friend
Dear Missing Friend by Susan McGuirk a story being told through letter writing from Catherine McGuirk as she navigates love, loss, heartbreak and dreams as an Irish Immigrant in 1800s America. Catherine is torn between her seafaring husband, the suitor she once refused and her own dreams and we see her life unfold through the choices she and others made as well as the words she writes down. While this isn’t during & after World War II, I like how the story is family history told written in the style of historical fiction and its an Irish immigrant’s story. While there were letters written back and forth between different people, I didn’t feel confused as to who is writing to who. I was also fortunate to interview Susan McGuirk, which you can read here! https://booknotions.com/qa-with-susan-mcguirk/
