What Wakes The Bells

In this dark magical fantasy, What Wakes The Bells is a tale that takes place in the city of Vaiwyn. Mina Strauss & her family for a thousand years have guarded the bells preventing the vespers from ringing thirteen times or else an ancient evil will be released. That awful day comes and the bells/vespers ring thirteen times and evil runs amuck in Vaiwyn. Can Mina, Max and the remaining saints of long ago stop the evil that’s been unleashed? Can Mina kill the host that the evil now controls even if it’s someone she loves?

Unique World/Story, Writing & Characters

What Wakes The Bells is a unique story. Even though the City of Vaiwyn isn’t a real city, you get a sense that it is real, and I like the fact that saints and cathedral exist in this world since I’m a Catholic obviously. I know the city is taken from Prague, a place I’ve never been.  I realize it’s not Catholicism a hundred percent, but it’s taken from it. The writing is good. I do agree with one Goodreads review that certain things could have been explained a little bit better & clearer. Like Bastien’s decent into evil. He basically reached too below the surface and encountered something but I’m not sure what that something was exactly. I would like to know how the saints received their powers. I think a great prequel book about the saints and their magic would be great.  While I do like that What Wakes The Bell is a young adult fantasy, I think adults like me who aren’t into young adults anymore can enjoy the story for its unique premise & characters.
