Upcoming Book to Movie Adaptions

Hey everyone this is your book blogger Bianca blogging about everything books whether is reviews, what writers are writing, movie adaptions of books etc. This Newsletter is going to be a little different since it’ll be a list of some movie adaptions of books coming out this year instead of focusing solely on one book. Some of these I’m excited about but whether you’re excited about one or more of these books becoming movies or shows something on this list is bound to excite people. The information I have is from the source bookbub and some of the trailers for the upcoming film adaptions are available on youtube. (Note for whatever reason release dates change for when these come out, or if for some unforeseeable reason these projects get cancelled I will let everyone know.)

First book I will talk about for Mystery/Thriller fans is the book The Woman in the Window. I previously reviewed this book in the past. It was a little farfetched in some aspects but it had its good moments. The Woman in the Window is about an agoraphobic psychologist named Anna Fox. Anna is agoraphobic meaning she has a fear of the outdoors due to something that happened in her past. Anna is obsessed with wine and watching old black and white films and befriends Jane Russell one of the new neighbors. One night she sees something awful happen to Jane that she shouldn’t have, everyone thinks Anna fantasized the incident. This is similar to Alfred Hitchcock’s movie Rear Window. Amy Adams is staring as the lead Anna Fox, Julianne Moore stars as Mrs. Jane Russell and Gary Oldman is Mr. Russell.  The movie comes out May 15th and the trailer is available on YouTube.

The second book I’m going to mention is for fans of wildlife and battling with nature called Call of the Wild. I remember vaguely one of my grade school teachers reading this to us in school. It’s about a dog named Buck whose a sled dog that has to rely on his instincts to help him and his master survive the bitter cold harsh wild. A lister Harrison Ford, Karen Gillan (Doctor Who and the Jumanji sequels), and Bradley Whitefield from The West Wing will star in this.

The movie is expected to come out February 21st. The trailer is on YouTube.

Next I will talk about Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden published in 1911. I haven’t read the book but I want to. Its regarded a classic and is getting a second movie. The first movie came out in the 90s with Maggie Smith. Mary Lennox is sent to live with her uncle after her parents died of Cholera and discovers a garden that is locked away. Julie Walters (best known to my generation as Mrs. Weasley from Harry Potter) Colin Firth and Jemma Powell will star in this remake.

It will be released April 17th of this year and the trailer is available on YouTube.

This next book I’m going to mention is for young adults who love fantasy. This took a while for Hollywood to do because I remember hearing as a kid that this would be made but it gets pushed back and pushed back and pushed back and pushed back (you know how Hollywood is and how everything can and sometimes does end up in developmental hell). This is Eion Colfer’s Artemis Fowl which is about Artemis a 12 year old son of a crime boss. He seems to be following his father’s footsteps doing petty crimes and very wealthy. Artemis kidnaps a fairy thinking she is a harmless creature. He’ll find out the hard way that that’s not the case. The cast is as follows, Dame Judi Dench, Josh Gad (Frozen), and newcomer Ferdia Shaw in the title role.

The release date is May 29th and the trailer is available on YouTube.

This next book The One and Only Ivan is for the children in your life. The One and Only Ivan is written by Katherine Applegate. Ivan, is a laid-back gorilla who enjoys watching t.v . and loves to draw. When Ivan meets a baby elephant named Ruby, he comes to see his life and his artwork in a whole new way. Disney is doing the adaption and in the age of Disney (And really all the movie houses in Hollywood) constantly doing live action remakes, I think it’s nice that something original is coming for once. There is also a combo of A list actors in the movie which are, Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing), Angelina Jolie, Helen Mirren, Danny DeVito, and Bryan Cranston.

The release date is August 14th.

This next book will excite Sci-Fi Fans called Dune by Frank Herbert. Frank Herbert’s Dune is one of the top-selling sci-fi books of all time. Paul Atreides, heir to the throne of Arrakis — an unforgiving desert land, where everyone longs to get their hands on a substance that can add years to one’s life — must embark on a quest filled with high adventure.  I seem to vaguely remember that there was either a movie or tv series in the 80s or 90s and the first attempt didn’t go well. However I am lenient with remakes when it comes to book adaptions because you know how Hollywood half the time doesn’t get it right the first time around and angers the author of the original source material. Add in A list actors that are Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones) Rebecca Ferguson (The White Queen, Girl on the Train, Doctor Sleep), and Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name for fans of Dune I hope this news has you pumped.

Release date: December 18

The Knife of Never Letting Go is the first book in a dystopian trilogy by Patrick Ness who also wrote the book When a Monster Calls which is inspired by an idea by Sioban Dowd who passed away before she could write it herself. Todd Hewitt is one of the boys in a town occupied only by men. What happened to the women and how the hell are they supposed to reproduce you might ask? The women were killed off by a virus called The Noise Germ which enables them to hear each other’s thoughts. Todd one day encounters a girl and everything he knew was a lie obviously. The film adaptation is called Chaos Walking and has a cast that will include Daisy Ridley (from the sequel trilogy in the Star Wars franchise), Tom Holland (Spiderman) , and Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal). This promises to be the perfect choice for dystopian adventure fans. The date will be announced but according to this source it will come out in 2020. Keep your fingers crossed that Hollywood doesn’t beat around the bush.

This next book is another classic that is coming out into theaters (again) called Emma from Jane Austen. Its about the matchmaker Emma in British society. If you’re a fan of British t.v. like I am you may know some of these actors that will star in Emma, Anya Taylor-Joy (Peaky Blinders) delivers a fun and sassy Emma, Josh O’Connor (The Crown) plays the role of Mr. Elton beautifully, Rupert Graves (Sherlock) expertly takes on the role of Mr. Weston.

This film will be released on February 21st. The trailer is available on YouTube.

Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile sees her much-beloved character Hercule Poirot aboard a river cruise along the Nile when a young beauty, Linnet Ridgeway, suffers a gunshot to the head. In this traditional whodunit, no one is as they seem and anyone could be the guilty party. This adaptation sees the return of Kenneth Branagh to both the director’s seat and the role of Poirot, as well as performances by Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman and will be playing Heddy Lamar an actress and Irena Sendler a Polish nurse who saved Jewish children in upcoming projects) Annette Bening (American Beauty), and Armie Hammer (Mirror Mirror, The Social Network). If you’re a fan of who done it mysteries like I am get ready to get excited!

The movie will be released on October 9th.

The final book I’m going to mention is for fans of themes where the main character is out for revenge but then love gets in the way. It is called The Rhythm Section by Mark Burnell. In this novel Stephanie Patrick loses her family violently she goes from disguising herself as a student, to a business person to a terrorist. Sounds to me she will stop at nothing to get her revenge that is until she falls in love.  Blake Lively in the leading role as Stephanie, Sterling K. Brown (Black Panther, The People vs. OJ Simpson) and Jude Law will also be a part of the cast.

The film will be released January 31st
