The Unwritten Rules of Magic
The Unwritten Rules of Magic
Emmerson Clarke is dealing with a lot right now between losing her father famous fantasy author to Alzheimer’s and her mother being an alcoholic and her daughter Sadie shutting her out. Emmerson’s own writing career has been put on hold, and she’s been a ghost writer. Until now she finds a typewriter her father used that granted wishes that had consequences. Emmerson uses it too thinking she’s being careful but regardless, be careful what you wish for.
Choices, Consequences & The Magic of Everyday Life
I enjoy magical realism and really any stories with magic in it. It was lighthearted in the first half. The last bit was a bit heavy. While I didn’t agree with Sadie’s choice, I do like the fact that while Emmerson was tempted to erase the pain away for Sadie, she chose not to. This book is a reminder, don’t forget the lesson but at the same time don’t agonize over what could have been. Life is complicated, life is uncertain, but it also has magic in the ordinary things if you only know where to look… I also like how Emmerson stopped constantly fearing the unknown and she finally decided to embrace opportunities to make her life better despite the uncertainty. This is definitely an end of the year/beginning of the new year type of book too that will make you reflect on your own life. The Unwritten Rules of Magic by Harper Ross comes out on January 27th 2026!
