The Haunting Of Paynes Hollow

The Haunting Of Paynes Hollow

Samantha Payne’s grandfather passed away and doesn’t expect her name to show up in the will after not seeing him in 14 years. Surprisingly, Samantha will inherit a lakefront property along with some money. The catch is; in order to inherit it, Sam must stay at the property for a month. It’s something she doesn’t want to do considering she witnessed her father burying a teenage boy’s body and the murdered boy’s brother, Ben is the caretaker. Sam’s grandfather believes she’ll realize her father was innocent of the boy’s murder. While staying there, Sam is plagued by nightmares that meld into repressed memories, cries of the forests, hooves of a horse, and figures coming from beneath the lake….

Great Story, Great Writing But Some Pacing Issues

The story was great & Kelley is an excellent writer. This is the first time I have read anything by her and I’m glad I have. I could see descriptions of the dark forest, the lake and the figures coming out of the lake and hearing the hooves of the horse since there is headless horseman lore. There were so many twists and turns that I did not see coming. I also like Samantha as a character as well as the cop’s daughter Jess, I think it was her name. The only issue I’ve got was the pacing that seemed slow and repetitive, and I was thinking get to the point already. Just a warning, there are dead animals that someone cut up so if you are sensitive to reading that type of stuff, you have a decision to make if you want to read it or not. A villain gets their bloody end too. Overall, I did enjoy it. It’s a great spooky read for October. If you’re a Kelley Armstrong fan or if you’re reading her for the first time, I recommend it.
