Swan Song Diana My Sister: This is One Song I Never Want To Listen To Again
Earl Charles Spencer is the brother of the late Princess Diana of Wales. In this memoir he writes about how he found out about her death, and flashbacks to their childhood and of course it’s obvious his dislike of Charles and the royals. While I do give Charles credit, that he is a good writer and historian, great writing alone isn’t enough to make this a good memoir honoring someone you claim to miss.
If Bitterness Was a Book
Oh Charles, you really suckered me in with the cover and the fact that this memoir teased that there would be new information the public didn’t hear before & it would be a heartfelt memoir of your sister. The writing I give Charles props for is good, but good writing alone isn’t enough to create a great book, especially a memoir! Instead, this entire book was Charles Spencer being bitter against the now King Charles. I feel there are sprinkles of the truth in the memoir, but there are claims that Earl Charles alleges that I question how much of it is the truth. I will never condone Charles cheating on Diana; I have some sympathy for him because he was pressured into marrying Diana and should have been with Camilla all along. (not to mention Queen Elizabeth II wasn’t the warmest mother, but that’s another whole topic). I believe a small part of him saw that with Diana’s death, he’s now free to marry Camilla. It wouldn’t be normal if he didn’t see that. I don’t think he was giddy like Charles Spencer claimed, & if he was, for the sake of his sons, I don’t think he’d be that heartless because he had their feelings to consider. Charles Spencer also claimed that his father and the Queen had a romance but that Phillip’s uncle, Lord Mountbatten put a stop to it. I don’t know if I believe that because neither the Queen, Phillip, Lord Mountbatten nor Charles Spencer’s father are alive to tell their side of the story. If I could speak to Diana, I would tell her she deserves so much better. If you want a memoir about Diana, this isn’t it. If you want a bad bitter taste of something, then yes go check this one out.
