Q&A With Trevor W. Harrison
Another author whom Mickey Mikkelson connected me with is Trevor W. Harrison. Trevor is the author of Tales This Side of The Elysian Fields.
Q: Trevor could you please give a brief description of Tales This Side of The Elysian Fields?
A: Tales This Side of the Elysian Fields is a collection of essays recalling retired University of Lethbridge professor Trevor W. Harrison’s world travels in the 1970s and early ‘80s. From working on a railroad in Western Canada to portraying a Hittite in a Biblical movie epic in Israel to attending bullfights in Spain and living like a hippie in Greece, Harrison’s memorable experiences make for entertaining, enlightening, and thought-provoking reading in this collection of personal essays. While many of the tales are humorous, some are also poignant. Included in the book are Harrison’s own photos and sketches of places he travelled to.
Q: Are you currently writing another book similar to Tales This Side of The Elysian Fields?
A: Not exactly similar, but I have another book scheduled for publication by Athabasca University Press in spring 2025, Safarnameh: A Traveller’s Journey Along the Hippie Trail. It recalls my journey from Turkey to India in 1976-77.
I am also working on a collection of fictional short stories and a couple of books of poetry.
Q: What lessons do you hope readers learn & feel after reading Tales This Side of The Elysian Fields?
A: Besides being entertained, I hope readers will learn something about my own roots as a popular writer and an academic, and how the two of these hats often inform each other.
Q: Which of the places in your book were your favorite places to travel?
A: I have a soft spot for Greece and southern Europe as a whole. I love not only the water, the food, and the music, but also the warm and nurturing culture of the countries. But I have found much to like about every country I have travelled to and the people who live there.
