Q&A With Kylie Scott
Kylie Scott’s is a New York Times, USA Today & Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author of Romance! I have the honor of interviewing her. Kylie’s many works are series, standalones and novellas. Some of Kylie’s works are The Larsen Brothers Series, Dive Bar Series, & Stage Dive Bar Series. Kylie’s standalones are So My Ex-Boyfriend Is A Serial Killer, Because The Night: A Vampire Romance, & Wildflowers An End of the World Romance. According to Kylie’s bio, she has sold over 2,000,000 books and was voted Australian Romance Writer of the year four times by the Australian Romance Reader’s Association.
Q: Welcome to Book Notions Kylie! I’m very happy you’re here! Would you please give a brief description of your work?
A: Thank you so much! My stories range from suspense and contemporary to post-apocalyptic and vampire. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and The Stand by Stephen King are two of my favorite books and I think that shows up in my work in the way I go from romance to scary and back again. I’ve written over twenty books and have been published for over a decade. Whatever story is speaking to me the loudest and grabs me by the imagination is what I write. World building, creating intriguing characters, and researching areas such as true crime keep the words flowing.
Q: What made you want to write romance and how long have you been doing it for?
A: Our relationships are some of the most important things in our lives. Whether it be romantic, friendship, or family. Exploring our ties with other people fascinates me. I started writing seriously about sixteen years ago. I’d take my laptop to work and get words down during my lunch hour or on the weekend. Reading romance has always been a passion of mine. I’m part of the generation who read books like Flowers in the Attic and Lace when I was way too young.
Q: Do you begin each day with breakfast and coffee or perhaps a walk, before sitting down at your desk to plot, write and edit? How many hours a day do you spend plotting and writing?
A: I work from about six in the morning to around three in the afternoon. Coffee and feeding my dog and cat comes first. How many hours are spent writing depends on what project I have on the go and other author jobs that are happening. Marketing and admin and so on. There’s a lot of different roles involved with being an author these days. The variety can be great, but it keeps you busy. Writing time also varies according to how the story is shaping up inside my head. My process is more organic than organized. I aim for between one to two thousand words a day. But sometimes you need to take a day off writing and do other jobs to give the story a chance to simmer in your brain.
Q: How long does it take you to write each book and what are messages and emotions you hope readers takeaway after they read your books?
A: It’s taken me between one month and a year to write different books. Though I only pulled off the one month for a full size novel once. Three to six months is probably my average. And I hope readers are entertained and enjoy the high from being taken away from their everyday life. Having my female characters stand up and kick ass is also important to me.
Q: Are there any exciting upcoming releases and current works in progress that fans should be excited about?
A: So My Ex Boyfriend Is A Serial Killer is out in ebook and print November 11th and I cannot wait. Researching true crime for the project got me hooked. I’ve been watching so many documentaries. Though it also gave me some wild nightmares at first. But showing the heroine fighting back and healing has made it a favorite.
Q: Does Hollywood have the rights to your work? Who would be your dream cast to play the characters you created?
A: That would be amazing. Fingers crossed. I’m not sure who would be my dream cast. But I’m a big fan of Florence Pugh and also Australian actor Sam Reid. He plays Lestat in Interview With The Vampire. The whole cast of the series are so good.
Q: Congratulations on being on not one, but three Bestsellers Lists! How does it feel knowing that your books are all New York Times, USA Today & Wall Street Journal Bestsellers?
A: Not all of them have hit the lists, but it’s wonderful when it happens. Knowing my books have made it into the hands of passionate readers is everything.
Q: How does it feel knowing that you were voted Australian Romance Writer of the year 4 times?
A: That was a huge honor. Romance has a strong community both online and off, and I love being a part of it. The Australian Romance Readers Association have signings in several major cities each year that are well worth attending.
Q: You live in Queensland Australia! I can’t wait to travel someday. What are your favorite places in Queensland that you hope people coming to Australia for the first time should see?
A: I love visiting the Sunshine Coast and the small towns in the hinterland behind it. We have some great beaches and brilliant bookshops. Though we’re experiencing an early summer right now and it’s hot as heck.
