Q&A With Brad C. Anderson

Mickey Mikkelson connected me with author Brad C. Anderson. Brad is the author of the Sci-Fi novel Duatero. On top of being an author, Brad teaches undergraduate business courses at a local university in Vancouver Canada.

Q: Brad, would you like to tell the readers of the blog what your sci-fi novel Duatero is about and where the idea for the novel came from?

A: Duatero tells the tale of a dying world. Colonized by Earth, it mysteriously lost contact with the mother planet thousands of years ago and has experienced a slow decline since then. Recently, changes in the native flora have accelerated its decline.

It falls to Kredo, a hero of the people, to save the colony, but everything he knows fails him.

The idea came to me a few years ago when debating climate change with a friend. I realized we each immerse ourselves in a bubble of beliefs that informs how we understand the world. This blinds us. How can we solve complex problems when our perceptions are so limited? I wanted to explore that theme, and thus, Duatero was born.

Q: Out of all the genres to write in, what drew you into writing sci-fi?

A: Reality is so limiting! I want to explore grand themes and ideas without constraints. I love imagining ways the world could be.

I believe science fiction and fantasy allows us to step outside our heads and see our world in a new way. Through it, we can see problems differently and imagine new ways of being.

Q: Are you currently writing a sequel to Duatero or is your next book a standalone novel?

A: My next book, Ashme’s Song, is a standalone novel coming out in November 2024. It focuses on Ashme and her special needs twin brother, Shen. Her world is falling into civil war, and she is torn between taking up the call to arms versus caring for her brother.

Q: Does Hollywood have the rights to Duatero? Who would be your ideal cast to play the characters?

A: Hollywood has not called yet.

In my dream cast, George Clooney would play Kredo, supported by Jennifer Lawrence as his second, Talia. Anya Taylor-Joy and Austin Butler would round out the cast as Esper and Jak.

Q: How long did it take for you to write Duatero?

A: Years! I am a slow writer. 🐢
