Q&A With Bob Brill

Mickey Mikkelson was kind enough to connect me with author, radio host, news anchor at CBS Radio LA; KNX97.1 FM, & 1070 News Radio, & podcaster Bob Brill. Bob is the author of The Tattoo Murder & the Lance Hero Of The West Series.

Q: Bob would you please tell the readers and I about both your Lance Hero Of The West Series & The Tattoo Murder books?

A: Lancer: Hero of the West is a series of seven and what will be 10 books about a character I created named Lancer. Lancer is a wealthy good guy gunslinger who solves crimes around the country and helps people out while being based in Tombstone, Arizona Territory. He fights for justice, respects women and kids and is a man of integrity.

Lancer has his women, many of them, but none are his main squeeze. He uses his wits first, his fists second and when he resorts to the gun, you are dead because he’s quick and deadly. His great horse Lincoln is always there, named after the President he served as a young officer in the Civil War.

In each novel I reveal a little bit more about his past and eventually in book 10, the entire story of Lancer will be laid out for readers. Number 10 is planned with two more in between. The San Francisco Affair is due out in 2025.

The Tattoo Murder is set in modern-day Ventura, California, which is a small seaside community about two hours north west of Los Angeles. John Potenza is a well-respected cop with Ventura PD who travels to his own drum. An old school cop who was an Army Ranger during the Balkans War, he’s seen injustice and goes out of his way to make things right.

A good-looking man about town, he is the man every woman wants, and every man wants to be.

The Tattoo Murder is a complicated tale of a dead body washing up on shore which leads to a whole lot more than just a homicide. It eventually leads Potenza to try and stave off a war between two rival biker gangs. In real life, Ventura is the corporate home of the Hells Angels.

John’s family plays a big role in the book, mainly to give the reader an idea of where he comes from and why he is, who he is. His Italian mother, his former soldier father and his hairdresser sister along with a lot of friends are all involved in the story. As well as corrupt officials, but then let’s not give too much away.

Q: Book 7 of the Lance Hero Of The West Series is out. Are you currently writing book 8 or are you writing something completely different?

A: Book eight is on the drawing board and I’ll probably start writing it in January. I’ve got several screenplays and a different book I’m working on now which I need to clear the decks first.

Q: Bob, you are a busy man! How do you juggle being an author, radio host, news anchor & podcaster? Would you like to tell us about your podcasts and post your links here for them?

A: My main podcast now is “Interesting People with Bob Brill” where I interview people about their jobs, but it’s become much more than that. I’ve gone back in time and pulled out interviews I did earlier in my radio career and radio documentaries as well. Then for 30 days I did 30 days on the radio, telling stories from my career. I started this when I reached a milestone; 50 years in broadcasting.

Q: What lessons do you hope readers learn from your books?

A: Books are still viable in the world of Tik Tok and Instagram. Stories are stories, no matter where you find them, but becoming invested in book stories is much more satisfying than a 10-second meme on Facebook.

Q: If Hollywood were to get the rights to your work, who would be your dream cast for Lance & the characters in his series and the characters in The Tattoo Murder? The entertainment industry needs new content and not the same old remakes, reboots, sequels, prequels and spin offs.

A: For Lancer I readily see Eric Bana. I think he fits the mold and being from Down Under, I’m sure he’d love to play a serious western character. Probably the same or similar for Potenza. I also like Scott Eastwood. If I were to go to a younger character/actor there are myriad guys. I really like a young actor, Edward Gusts. I think Gusts would do justice to any of them.

Q: In the Press Release Mickey gave me, you have a YouTube channel leaving movie reviews! I love YouTube! Would you please post the link to your YouTube channel so we can subscribe.

A: Sure
