Q&A With Ashdeep K Toor

I’m so delighted and honored to be interviewing publicist and Mickey Mikkelson’s fellow assistant, Ashdeep K Toor! It’s so exciting to be interviewing publicists, agents and others in the publishing industry, because without them, we would not have the amazing authors and their stories out in the world! 

Q: Welcome to Book Notions Ashdeep! I’m happy to be interviewing you! What drew you into a career as a publicist? How did you and Mickey meet and become his assistant? 

A: Thank you so much for having me! I’m excited to be here!

I’ve loved reading books since I was child and have always been interested in the stories behind the authors who write them. I studied Media, which inspired me to pursue a career in publicity and publishing. I enjoy connecting with authors and seeing all the hard work that goes into creating a book.

Mickey and I first met while working together at a retail store about two years ago. Later, our paths crossed again, and I had the opportunity to become his assistant. It’s been a wonderful experience, and I’m grateful to work with talented authors and help share their stories with readers.

Q: How does a typical day begin for you? What’s it like working for Mickey?

A: I like to start my day with a workout—it helps me stay focused and energized for the day ahead.

Working alongside Mickey has been both fun and rewarding. He gives me the opportunity to turn my ideas into reality, explore new aspects of the publishing industry, and connect with incredible authors. Learning about their journeys and being part of their book promotion is an experience I truly enjoy.

Q: What wisdom do you give for anyone wanting to become a publicist & assistant? 

A: My biggest advice is to stay curious, be patient, and never stop learning. Every author, every book, and every project teaches you something new. Strong communication and a genuine passion for helping others are essential in this field. Most importantly, believe in yourself, work hard, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. The opportunities you take today can lead to an amazing career tomorrow. 

Q: If you were to become an author yourself, would you write fiction or nonfiction? 

A: I enjoy fiction, but I’m naturally drawn to nonfiction. If I ever wrote a book, it would be based on real-life stories that could inspire and encourage others. If my writing could motivate even one person to keep going or never give up, I would consider that a success. Knowing that you’ve made a positive difference in someone’s life would be the most rewarding part of being an author.
