Q: Why was now the right time to write and release The Journey From Manuscript to Print? How long did it take you to write it?

A: My editor always says that a book comes out when it is supposed to.

It felt like the right time for release because it addresses a timeless subject: bringing a written work into the world. As for the timing, well, it’s always a good time to delve into the intricacies of publishing. With the continual evolution of technology and the publishing industry, there’s always something new to learn and share.

As for the duration, it took me about seven years to write with many starts and stops. I started it in 2017, worked on and off, finishing it in 2019, then completely rewriting it in 2024. I wanted to ensure I covered the topic comprehensively, touching on the various stages of the journey from the initial spark of an idea to holding the finished book in your hands. Writing a book is like embarking on an expedition; it takes time, dedication, and a willingness to navigate the twists and turns along the way.

Q: Are you currently writing another novel similar to The Journey From Manuscript to Print, a book about a different topic, or will you try your hand at fiction this time?

A: I’ve actually dabbled in fiction under a pen name, so it’s funny that you bring up the topic. Lately, I’ve been considering publishing a workbook and creating ‘what if’ cards to complement The Journey From Manuscript to Print. However, amidst these plans, an irresistible urge to delve into the world of mystery writing has captured my imagination. It seems I can’t shake off the idea of crafting a captivating mystery narrative. I am pretty sure that the mystery will win!

Q: What lessons do you want readers to learn from The Journey From Manuscript to Print?

A: In “The Journey from Manuscript to Print: A Guide to Publishing Your Book,” I aim to provide aspiring authors with comprehensive knowledge and practical advice on navigating the complex world of publishing. Ultimately, my goal is to empower aspiring authors with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to navigate the publishing landscape and bring their literary dreams to fruition.

Q: Would you please tell us about how you founded Kirk House Publishers and what it’s like being a co-owner of Kirk House Publishers?

A: In 1997, my husband embarked on an entrepreneurial journey by establishing a printing company specializing in business cards and letterhead. Over the years, our passion for printing evolved, leading us to establish FuzionPrint in 2009. With a focus on small digital print runs, our services expanded to include brochures, presentations, and spiral-bound books.

In 2010, we launched FuzionPress, marking our entry into the realm of author services. Our journey took an exciting turn when we were invited to participate in a local writer’s festival, where we crossed paths with the owners of Kirk House Publishers. This encounter led to a collaboration in printing and fulfilling book orders. As fate would have it, in 2020, upon their retirement, we had the honor of acquiring Kirk House Publishers.

Founded in 1994, Kirk House Publishers had a distinguished legacy of publishing books that were inspirational, motivational, spiritual, and educational. We are proud to continue their mission, dedicated to producing works that uplift and enlighten readers. Our ultimate aim is to leave behind a lasting legacy of books that inspire and empower humanity.

Working in the publishing industry is truly remarkable. I often joke that I get to read books at my job, but it’s far more than that. There’s a profound joy in being a part of bringing an author’s passion to life. One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is witnessing the sheer delight on an author’s face when I hand them their finished book for the first time. Their reaction speaks volumes and encapsulates the magic of our collaborative journey.

Q: What made you want to start a publishing company? What advice do you give to anyone wanting to start a publishing company?

A: A deep-seated passion for literature and a desire to contribute to the literary world fueled my decision to start a publishing company. The power of storytelling has always captivated me, and the transformative impact books can have on readers. Witnessing the creative process firsthand, from manuscript to printed page, ignited a desire to play a more active role in fostering and nurturing emerging authors, helping authors realize their dreams. Establishing a publishing company felt like a natural progression, providing a platform to amplify diverse voices, share interesting stories, and contribute meaningfully to the literary landscape.

Starting a publishing career is tough work, my advice is to be resilient. Understand that the publishing industry can be challenging and competitive. It doesn’t happen overnight. Be prepared to face setbacks, but remain resilient in pursuing your vision and goals. Learn from failures, adapt to feedback, and keep moving forward with determination and perseverance.
