Behind The Book Nothing Ever Happens Here With Seraphina Nova Glass
It doesn’t seem as though it’s been a year ago when I did my Behind The Book With Seraphina discussing her novel The Vacancy In Room 10 & then in the summer of 2023 I did my very first Q&A with her. To start off 2025, is my second Behind The Book discussing her upcoming release Nothing Ever Happens Here which will be available on February 11th! If you’re a fan of Seraphina’s novels, a fan of mysteries or this is your first time reading anything by her, you’re in for a treat…
Q: I’m glad to have you back Seraphina! Would you please give a brief description of Nothing Ever Happens Here? Where did the idea for the novel come from?
A: The book follows the story of three women with three different POV’s. Shelby, who survived a horrific attack and just as she begins to put it behind her, she starts receiving threats and knows he’s back. Mack, whose husband is missing and finds evidence he might be alive and, on the run, and Florence who lives in Oleander’s retirement home and along with her gang of fellow residents, decides to start a podcast and get overly involved in the two cases. As the three stories intertwine, we see how they are all connected until they are caught in a race against time before one of them ends up dead.
Q: When we briefly spoke last year after finishing our Behind The Book discussing The Vacancy In Room 10, you told me you were writing this novel & at the time I think it was named The Oleanders. So, did it take about a couple of months, almost a year to write Nothing Ever Happens Here?
A: It was originally titled The Oleander’s and was changed to the current title. It was just an idea back when we spoke. I began writing it December 2023 and finished it around April 2024 which is about average for how long it usually takes me to write a novel.
Q: Which scenes were your favorite to write? It’s hard for me to choose one. I love how its three women one of which is a senior citizen working together to figure out how everything is connected. One scene I really enjoyed was Shelby, Mac, Florence & Herb plotting on how to get rid of the killer since the police are such fools.
A: I think I really fell in love with Herb. He was one of my favorite characters to write and so the scenes with him were probably my favorite. I think he has a rough exterior coupled with empath’s soul and ended up, as a supporting character, stealing my heart.
Q: If you were to ever write a sequel to Nothing Ever Happens Here, what would Shelby, Mack, Florence & Herb be doing right now? I can imagine Florence would want to solve another murder with the podcast.
A: I think that’s true. I would love to get the gang back together to solve another murder, so Flor and Herb and the other residents would be upping their podcast game and solving another murder and Shelby would be reclaiming her little town as her peaceful haven and staying overly involved in all things PTA and Girl Scouts, and Mack would be happily living elsewhere moving on.
Q: When they get the rights to Nothing Ever Happens Here, who would you want to play the characters you created? Some of my suggestions would be Anne Hathaway for Mac, Jennifer Garner to be Shelby, Andrea Martin as Florence & maybe Mel Brookes as Herb.
A: I love those ideas. I could see Melissa McCarthy for Shelby, Amy Adams as Mack, and Lily Tomlin for Florence.
