Authors In The Media With Jaydi Samuels Kuba
I’m so excited to be reunited with the author of Your First Last Date Jaydi Samuels Kuba, to do this edition of Authors In The Media Q&A discussing her matchmaking business, her podcast Match Made In Hollywood & her tv writing career for shows which range from Family Guy to Salem!
Q: I’m glad to be interviewing you again Jaydi! Welcome back! Would you please talk about LJMatchmaking? If you want, please put a link to your business here too!
A: Thanks! LJMatchmaking is a business I co-founded with my amazing partner Lauren Rosenberg, who’s a talent manager in the entertainment industry, and former reality show producer. We both had a knack for setting people up, and had a similar vision for doing so for people in the film/TV world we were in (I write TV.) We’ve been in business over ten years now, and have set up dozens of incredible couples together.
Q: How many clients do you get per year?
A: Hundreds! While it’s a referral-only service, word of mouth has really spread over time, so we are fortunate that our inbox is always full with new requests for membership.
Q: What is your favorite and least favorite part in your career as a matchmaker & dating coach? How do you deal with difficult clients?
A: My favorite part is being an instrumental part of my clients’ journeys to find love. If I can’t directly introduce them to their husbands and wives, hopefully I’m also their dating coach, and can arm them with the tools they need outside my service to succeed. We used to have more challenging clients in the past, but now we have a waitlist, and only activate memberships when we feel like we are in a position to truly help find someone’s match – and that’s taken away some difficulties. Someone’s journey can be difficult, but it doesn’t mean they are.
Q: I have done Q&As with authors who juggle different careers whether its tv writing, journalism, editing etc. What was it like being a writer for Family Guy & Salem? I enjoyed the show Salem when it was on. Were there other tv shows you’ve written for and do you still write for tv now?
A: I’ve written for many others, although I’m not sure you’ve heard of them! Most recently I was in the writers’ room for Good Times on Netflix, although not the version that aired – the “better” version that never saw the light of day, because they wound up firing our entire room! I still write TV. In fact, I’m taking out two different shows right now (to try and sell.)
Q: Since you have written for tv, would you ever write a screen play for your book Your First Last Date & for the podcast Match Make Made In Hollywood? I would watch both as a series or a movie. They did turn the books Sex And The City & He’s Just Not That Into You into a show and movie.
A: Love that you asked this! I’m currently taking out a very loose adaptation inspired by a minor character in the book. I hope executives agree with you!
Q: What made you start the podcast Match Made In Hollywood? What is your advice for anyone wanting to do a podcast?
A: I started the podcast as a fun way to connect with my husband, and also to try to sell more books! I’m so passionate about the finished product and want as many people as possible to read it. But I underestimated what launching a successful podcast would entail. It is so time consuming! And technical. I’d start by making sure you invest in equipment that will make the audio sound professional. And consider what makes your podcast different from all the others out there. Have a strategy to help make yours stand out!
Q: Who in Hollywood have you interviewed for your podcast? Do you ever get starstruck talking to famous people on your podcast? I know I still get starstruck emailing famous authors and different people in the publishing industry for my blog!
A: I rarely get starstruck and neither does my husband, since we’ve both been in the business such a long time. The most famous couple we interviewed so far is Heather and Terry Dubrow, but they’re more friends than strangers. In fact, they took us out to dinner to celebrate our engagement! I do admit I get a bit starstruck by some chefs. They’re in an entirely different industry and I really admire what they do. I met Michael Voltaggio once and fell absolutely silent.
Q: Would you please provide a link to your podcast here? My readers and I do enjoy podcasts!
A: Thanks for asking! The new season is coming soon: https://open.spotify.com/show/0luKTNiPSiXNQj3yTrhQpQ
