Q&A With DC Gomez
Another guest Mickey Mikkelson connected me with is award-winning USA Today Bestselling author of The Cat Lady Series, DC Gomez. DC Gomez is also a podcaster, coach & motivational speaker. In a past life, DC studied film and television at New York State University and served in the military!
Q: Would you like to tell the readers of the blog and I about The Cat Lady Series & how you came up with the concept for it being a mystery series?
A: Hi Bianca, thank you so much for this opportunity to connect with you and your readers. The Cat Lady Series is more of an accident. A few years back, I was driving home from a romance convention where I was one of three authors that did not write romance. Leaving the event, I told myself I should write a romance so I wouldn’t stick out so much as the lone-urban fantasy writer. The first book, The Cat Lady Special, was supposed to be a story of second chances. Finding love after a horrible divorce and discovering your inner strength. I was excited to write this, except that’s not the book it turned out. Yes, it’s all about second chances, finding your tribe, and fighting for the people you love. But Angela does not end up with a man. She goes from being a depressed cat lady to an arm dealer and becomes a better version of herself. In book two, the adventures continued with a murder mystery.
Q: Are you writing the next book in The Cat Lady Series?
A: I currently have a title for book 3, Revenge of the Cat Lady. As well as the major premise for it. In the next couple of months, I will work out an outline and then start the writing process. This is my favorite part of the process, so I have learned to take my time and really enjoy it.
Q: How does it feel that your books are on the USA Today Bestsellers list?
A: I can honestly say, working to make the list was one of my career goals. It was a mind-blowing day to see months of hard work with an incredible group of authors paying off. A very humbling experience and I’m extremely grateful for all the readers who supported us.
Q: What made you want to pursue writing? Did you always know that was what you wanted to do with your life?
A: Since I was very young, I knew I was meant to be a storyteller. At that time, I thought I was going to be making videos and films. Life took a different turn when I joined the military. I became more serious and focused on work. After years in the corporate world with no creative outlet, I came back to writing. Life is a lot more fun now that I’m creating consistently.
Q: On top of writing you have a podcast, as well as being a coach and motivational speaker. How do you juggle all of that with being an author?
A: I probably must admit that I’m a recovering workaholic. Picking up new projects and activities is nothing new to me. I thrived in the different things going on. In order to stay the same and not burned out, I have automated many of my processes. My phone is my greatest super-weapon. Keeping a very good schedule and being able to have reminders that have made my life so much easier.
Q: Would you like to tell the readers and I about your podcast & why you chose the topic for your podcast? What is your advice to anyone wanting to start a podcast of their own?
A: Back in 2019/2020, I was looking for something creative to do that was fun and yet a little different from writing. I’m an avid reader and have always been curious about authors. Interviewing authors seems like a perfect fit for me. It was also something I knew I wouldn’t get bored with and could keep doing for a while.
For anyone interested in starting a podcast, I would recommend finding a topic that they don’t mind spending a lot of time on. Get over the initial shock of hearing your own voice. If you decide to edit the program, you will spend a lot of hours hearing yourself talk. That’s just a few.
Q: What’s it like being a motivational speaker? What is your advice for anyone wanting to be a motivational speaker?
A: We are currently living in a cancel culture. A place where it is easy to fall prey to the latest fashion and following trends. All these things have a way of destroying our self-esteem and focus. As a motivational speaker, my goal is to remind listeners of their innate worth. To bring focus to the things they are doing well and encourage people to keep pushing forwards toward their dreams.
The best advice they gave me when I started speaking was to live the values I was sharing with others. People can see fake news. If you would like to motivate others in a specific topic, then you have to live those principles. People will follow examples.
Q: You studied film and TV in college and then served in the military. What was it like studying film and TV and serving in the military? I also thank you for your service to our country!
A: I have a unique way of seeing the world, and I can give it credit to my college and military career. They influenced my sense of humor and the way I tackle problems and projects. Having a background in film/TV helped me to create stories that readers can visualize as a movie in their heads. That’s how I see them myself. With the military, I’m extremely honored for the four years I served and the friends I made. The Army has a way of reminding us that life is short, and you should always make the most of it.
