Book vs Adaptation: Marble Hall Murders
Book Vs Adaptation: Marble Hall Murders
Back in late April early March of 2025, I was fortunate to read a copy of Marble Hall Murders by Anthony Horowitz & I sped through it in a week. I was so excited about reading this one since I enjoyed the PBS shows based on Anthony’s books Magpie Murders & Moonflower Murders. I knew when the show returned that I would do this Book vs TV series adaptation review. Like all my past Book vs Adaptation reviews I will compare how the series stuck to the novel and what differences there are. Keep in mind, like all past Book vs Adaptation reviews there will be spoilers.
Locations in The Novel & Tv Version of Atticus Pund’s World
In the novel world of Atticus Pund, the location of the fictional mystery took place in The South of France. The television series changed the fictional location from the South of France to the Greek Island of Corfu. Corfu is lovely, though a big part of me wanted the South of France for the location. Maybe filming in the South of France would have been more expensive than filming in Corfu? I don’t know. This obviously changed the nationality of the detective Pund works with from French to Greek. A subplot in the tv version of Marble Hall Murders/Atticus Pund, is with stolen art from Greek antiquities during World War II.
Susan Reyland Returning to England & Freelance Editing
In both the novel and the show of Marble Hall Murders, Susan Ryeland moved back to England because her and Andreas called it quits. Susan tried to enjoy Crete, but it wasn’t for her. Susan was too busy with her work in freelance editing, and Andreas was too busy with the hotel, and they didn’t see each other much. Susan moved back home and her sister visited and gave her a cat after they caught up. Susan does read some of Elliot’s novel and brings suggestions. Susan also finds out that Elliot believes his grandmother Marian Crace was murdered.
Marion Crace Terrific Author, Terrible Person
In both the novel and show of Marble Hall Murders, Marian Crace is a successful author of the children’s series The Little People. However, how Marian acted in public was just a mask. Behind the mask she was not a kind elderly book author, Marian was rather a mean-spirited person who mistreated her family. When it’s revealed 20 years later that Marian did not die of natural causes, but was murdered, it all makes sense as there are several suspects and the motivations make perfect sense.
Elaine & Charles Clover Return
In both Marble Hall Murders novel and series, Elaine Clover reaches out to Susan. Elaine seems to have good intentions but of course Susan is cautious and so is the reader. After all, in Magpie Murders, Elaine’s husband, Charles, is found to be the murderer of Alan Conway, the author of the Atticus Pund novels. Atticus Pund made a lot of money not just for Alan but for Charles since he owned the publishing house where the books were being published. Charles even attempts to kill Susan because she gave him an ultimatum, that if he didn’t turn himself in after having one final evening with his family, she was going to call the police herself. Charles attempts to kill her by knocking her out and starting a fire. Luckily his plan failed and he’s currently serving 20 years in prison. It is then revealed that Elaine was trying to frame Susan for Elliot’s murder in revenge for Susan putting Elaine’s husband Charles, in prison.
Elliot Killed & his Brother Roland the father of his wife’s baby
After the memorial event talking about Miriam Crace an Elliot is the one who gets hit by a car after he is drunk. Elliot does end up dying in the hospital after the coma. Elliot’s older brother, Roland is the father of his wife’s baby since Elliot couldn’t father children.
The Murderers Revealed In Marble Hall & Atticus Pund
In both the novel and the show, In Atticus Pund’s story Robert Waysmith killed Lady Margaret Chalfont his stepmother and had gotten his step siblings involved in covering it up. He controlled them in a sense. Robert also killed the woman he was taking advantage of Alice Carling (her name is Andrewlakus due to the setting being changed from The South of France to Corfu Greece) who was in love with him and got her caught up in establishing an alibi. Once Alice realized what it was all about, she was going to reveal all but it was too late and she was killed. In the real world it was revealed that the adoptive child that was really Marion’s real biracial child Fredrick was the one who killed Marion Crace & then killed her grandson Elliot when he finds out the truth or believed Elliot was on to him. Initially Marion didn’t treat Fredrick the best and the fact that she hid the fact she was his mother and never met his real father had done it for him. We know Fredrick is in his 60s and when Marion had him it would have been a scandal. Granted Marion was a mean-spirited woman, she cheated and mistreated her family, but it gives no right to murder. Susan begins a romantic relationship with Ian Blakely a policeman and helps his writing career take off.
