 Q&A With Diana Daniele

I’m so delighted to be doing this Q&A with author, essayist and literary publicist Diana Daniele. Diana is currently querying a memoir, and has had her work featured in The New York Times, Newsweek, Huffington Post, Business Insider & more!

Q: Diana, welcome to Book Notions! You’ve written essays for some big publications. What advice do you have for anyone wanting to have their work similarly published?

A: To start, I would suggest taking a personal essay course with an author whom you admire to learn the structure, voice, and tone. Memoirist Terri Cheney does a great virtual class with Writing Pad that I have taken several times. As you begin conquering the form, I would suggest taking an essay class with multi-genre author Sue Shapiro, where she hosts editors from high-profile pubs, where students can listen, learn, and ask questions. Before taking Sue’s class, I recommend reading her book The Byline Bible

Q: What inspired you to write a memoir?

A: I lived through two, back-to-back invisible illnesses. I was miraculously healed from each one in little known or used (chronic migraine) and emerging treatments (depression and anxiety). I am sharing my story in hopes of helping others.

Q: Do you have another memoir in the works, or will your next book be fiction?

A: My next book will be a novel telling the story of two women, and their cross-cultural, transformational friendship. It will be set in Spain, Portugal and the U.S.

Q: What wisdom do you have for anyone wanting a career in either publicity or writing?

A: While these are two different careers paths, I would say what both of them share vis a vis being successful is PERSEVERANCE. In publicity, you must persevere and continue to reach out and follow-up to make things happen for your clients. As an author, you must persevere in writing a messy first draft, so you can go back and edit it and make it better, and then eventually polish it. When writing a book, you must also know how to pivot and kill your darlings!

Q: Diana, would you please provide links to your social media accounts so the readers of the blog and I may follow you and your work?
