Watch that? Read This! The Crown!
Watch That? Read This!
The Crown is one of Netflix’s most popular
shows even after the show ended for good in 2023. It’s full of history and intrigue
about the British royals beginning with the Elizabeth’s wedding to Phillip in
1947 when she was just a Princess, to the early years of her reign as Queen to
then ending in the mid-2000s with the wedding of King Charles III (formerly
known as Prince) & Camilla Shand. Recent news has come out about a prequel
spin off series of The Crown. There are several books both historical fiction
and nonfiction about the British royal family from the past to the present day.
These two historical fiction books written by Georgie Blalock are ones I highly
recommend.
Watch The Crown? Read The Other Windsor Girl
The Other Windsor Girl by
Georgie Blalock is a historical fiction novel about the late Queen Elizabeth II’s
sister, Princess Margaret. While it’s from the point of view of a fictional
lady of her entourage Vera Strathmore who dreams of becoming an author, the
book covers Margaret’s love affair with Captain Peter Townsend. You root for
them even though if you’ve watched The Crown or follow any royal history, you
know ultimately their romance would not last. As I was reading, I did picture Vanessa
Kirby and Ben Miles as both Margaret and Peter again. Like Vera, I wanted to go
back in time and warn Margaret not to marry Anthony “Tony” Armstrong Jones. Margaret
would have avoided a lot of heart break and an eventual awful divorce. While I
wished it went more in depth about how tumultuous Margaret and Tony’s marriage
was and both of their affairs, at the same time, I’m glad that it didn’t as it
would have been very depressing.
Watch The Crown? Read The Windsor Conspiracy
The Windsor Conspiracy by
Georgie Blalock takes place in 1937 and Amelia Montague is a private secretary
to Wallis Simpson in France. Yes that Wallis Simpson. The twice American divorcee
that Edward VIII gave up his throne to marry. This love story would eventually
sour. Wallis’s ambition and rage at how the royals treated her, would change
her and Edward to be self-centered and side with the nazis out of their own ambition.
After abandoning Amelia in Paris after the Nazi invasion, Amelia finds herself
in position to help the FBI uncover the Windsor’s shady dealings with the
Nazis, leading her to Nassau. While not every character was a real historical
person, Georgie Blalock did an excellent job of research for the novel.
