Q&A With Melanie Moreland
Wall Street Journal, USA Today & New York Times Bestselling Author Melanie Moreland is my latest author to do a Q&A with me for my blog booknotions.com Melanie writes romance, many of which are part of popular series and some standalones.
Q: Welcome to Book Notions Melanie! Would you please give a brief description of your work beginning with the newest to the oldest?
A: My last two books were a Canadian/Irish mafia duet called The Irishmen. The books were Finn and Niall. They followed the books prior – The Men of the Falls – Aldo and Roman – more Canadian Mafia.
I have almost 60 books so I will not list them all. I have a series called My Favorite – There has been My Favorite Kidnapper, My Favorite Boss and on Sept 30th, 2025, My Favorite Hero will be published. All romcoms, silly, over the top LOL humor as well as emotional and touching. So fun to write!
My bestselling series is The Contract series– featuring the asshole everyone loves to hate and hates to love, Richard Van Ryan. The series (3 books plus a novella) follows Richard and Katy and their life together.
Richard also shows up in the Vested Interest series ( 7 books) and the next generation series that follows it – the ABC series. All found family, falling in love, various problems and of course, love being paramount.
I have standalones, series, motorcycle men, blue collar, billionaires, morally gray heroes, rom coms – I am a mood writer and my work reflects that. Something for everyone!
My first book was in 2013 and was called Into the Storm. I have learned a great deal since then, but it is still one of my favorites.
You can find all my books on my website. They are listed, grouped, and there are family trees to keep track of everyone that should be connected!
Q: Where did your love of romance come from? Were there particular romance authors that made you want to create your love stories?
A: My mom loved to read, and Harlequins and Danielle Steele were her favorites. No one else in my family had a love of reading so as I grew up, she let me read her books so she could talk about them. I fell in love with the worlds the authors created and now I get to do the same thing. I grew from the drugstore books into Nora Roberts, Nicolas Sparks and many others. I love Historical Romance the best and have many favorites of that genre today, including Scarlett Scott who is my #1 go to.
Q: Where do the ideas for your characters and stories come from?
A: I get ideas everywhere. Watching people, overhearing snippets of conversations. Seeing a couple argue in the grocery store, or a woman waiting late at night at the bus stop. I start to imagine why they are fighting or why she is out so late, and then a story takes hold. Sometimes a character simply presents themselves to me and tells me what they want me to know. I often get up in the middle of the night to type something quickly, so I don’t forget it. Sometimes it is simply one line. Other times it goes on for pages. I never know when inspiration will strike.
Q: Are there any important messages you want the readers to know & emotions you want readers to feel after they finish reading your work? Which of your characters do you think you are most like & why?
A: I hope people come away from my stories with a smile. That perhaps I have added a little joy to their day. Take them out of the daily drag and into a world they can lose themselves in even if it is only for a few hours.
I write with a lot of emotion. I often make my readers cry. Laugh. Snort out loud. Shake their head in disbelief If I can evoke an emotion of any kind, I have done my job. Many of my books do feature Found Family, something I believe strongly in since it is prominent in my life. Love is stronger than only blood. Families come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Finding those who love you for you is what makes life so sweet.
A lot of my characters have me in them. I would say Kourtney from Over the Fence is most true to myself. I am here in many ways and many of her experiences growing up were mine. It was difficult to write at times, but cathartic as well.
Q: You have so many series and standalones! Can you reveal any upcoming releases and works you are currently writing?
A: My Favorite hero comes out Sept 30th, 2025. I am currently writing a top-secret project that I hope to announce in July sometime. It is a passion project of mine. I have a new series planned for next year and after that who knows. LOL – it depends if I see or hear something that sparks my interest.
Q: I know you mainly write contemporary romance; would you experiment outside of that and write historical romance and paranormal romance?
A: Maybe someday… There are ideas. LOL. There are always ideas – but I would only write them if I thought I could do a good job for my readers and not disappoint them.
Q: Congratulations on your books being on the Wall Street Journal, USA Today & New York Times Bestsellers Lists! How does that make you feel that your books are on not just one list but 3?
A: It is humbling and at times unbelievable. I love writing. I love the process. Discovering the characters. Making my readers love them. Having so many books translated into various languages was more than I ever dreamed. To be rewarded in that way was unexpected and overwhelming. I am grateful for this life I get to live every day.
Q: Does Hollywood currently have the rights to your work? The entertainment industry needs inspiration for new material. I’m sick of seeing remakes, reboots, sequels and prequels especially to stuff from decades past lol!
A: At this moment no. I would love to see that one day but am unsure if it will ever happen. What a dream that would be though!
