Birdsongs

Birdsongs by C.M. Crockford is a poetry collection with different topics. What they all have in common is life the harshness and beauty of it which is what it is.

Favorite Poem

Not all of the poems spoke to me, though I have to say my favorite poem in Birdsongs is titled Your Majesty. It criticizes kings’ behavior one of the obvious ones being Henry VIII who had six wives. Two of whom he beheaded who are also cousins. I’m going to take some time to nerd out on history here. I won’t spoil the entire poem, but my favorite part is this stanza

You’ll hear his order

Never his goodbye.

One day good company

Next day poison.

That is so true about many royals of centuries past. Also, I want to spend a minute geeking out on history. Should you ever be on Jeopardy, and they ask you about Henry VIII’s wives, they are Katherine of Aragon (divorced), Anne Boleyn Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Katherine Howard Katherine Parr. The rhyme to help you goes

Divorced (Katherine of Aaragon)

Beheaded (Anne Boleyn)

Died (Jane Seymour)

Divorced (Anne of Cleves)

Beheaded (Catherine Howard) (*Bonus* She’s Anne Boleyn’s cousin)

Survived (Katherine Parr)

Overall
